Background of the Study

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a critical role in addressing societal challenges, particularly in sectors such as health, education, and poverty alleviation. In Nigeria, NGOs often rely on donor funds and government support to execute their projects. Given the large amounts of money involved, financial accountability is crucial to ensure that funds are used as intended. Forensic accounting, with its emphasis on investigating financial records and uncovering fraud, has become an essential tool in promoting financial transparency and accountability within NGOs.

ActionAid Nigeria, as one of the country's leading NGOs, has faced numerous challenges related to financial mismanagement, including fraud and improper use of funds. Forensic accountants play a pivotal role in investigating financial transactions, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, and providing recommendations for improving financial controls. This study aims to evaluate the impact of forensic accounting on financial accountability in Nigerian NGOs, focusing on the case of ActionAid Nigeria, and to explore how forensic practices help maintain integrity in the use of donor funds.

Statement of the Problem

NGOs in Nigeria are often faced with challenges related to financial mismanagement, fraud, and corruption, despite their crucial role in development. While forensic accounting offers a potential solution to enhancing financial accountability, there is limited research on its impact within the NGO sector. 3. To identify the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing forensic accounting in Nigerian NGOs.

Research Questions

  1. How does forensic accounting impact financial accountability in ActionAid Nigeria?

  2. What role does forensic accounting play in detecting and preventing financial mismanagement in ActionAid Nigeria?

  3. What challenges does ActionAid Nigeria face in implementing forensic accounting to enhance financial accountability?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Forensic accounting significantly enhances financial accountability in Nigerian NGOs, such as ActionAid Nigeria.

  2. Forensic accounting plays a key role in detecting and preventing financial mismanagement in ActionAid Nigeria.

  3. The implementation of forensic accounting faces challenges in improving financial accountability within ActionAid Nigeria.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the role of forensic accounting in ActionAid Nigeria, evaluating its impact on financial accountability in the organization. The time frame will cover activities from 2015 to 2025.
